MOVIE: L'Ange de goudron (Tar Angel), Denis Chouinard, 2002. French with english subtitles. The story of an ordinary Arab family that settles in Quebec, the movie centres on an Algerian immigrant who is about to receive the citizenship papers that will finally open the doors to a better future for him and his family. But his dream is thrown into disarray by the political activities of his son Hafid to prevent the deportation of other immigrants.
WHY? Kader (Abdelkader Belaouni), an immigrant from Algeria, took sanctuary in St. Gabriel's church on 1 January 2006, in defiance of a discriminatory and unjust deportation order. Despite Kader's strong case and tons of support for Kader, the government has done nothing to fix the problem. Come on 13 July to hear more of Kader's story, get to know a wonderful member of our community, have fun together, and find out how you can get involved in the campaign to support Kader.
WHAT-TO-BRING? Please bring some food to share, bbq's available on site. No one will be turned away! We are also asking people to bring a larger dish, if you can, please confirm by emailing: jordan[at]resist[dot]ca.
